UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii, Italy, 11th June, 2011. The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was buried under 5 m of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and therefor has been largely preserved for todays science and archeology. Even scientific excavations are still ongoing, the site is mostly recovered and open to visitors. This picture shows the House of the Baker or Casa del Forno. It shows the remains of an ancient bakery.
