Kalianov village, West Papua, Indonesia - August 30, 2017: A woman of the Korowai people is harvesting a sago palm tree close to the tiny village (hamlet) of Kalianov in the Indonesian Province of Papua, close to the border with Papua New Guinea. The woman is carrying her baby on the back. Sago is a starch extracted from various tropical palm stems, especially that of Metroxylon sagu. It is the major staple food for the lowland peoples of New Guinea like the Korowai people. The Korowai people (sometimes also called Kolufu) are living at the Indonesian part of the island of Newguinea (West Papua). The Korowai are still living very isolated as hunter-gatherers and are famous for their tree houses. The first contact between Korowai and Westerners is documented only in 1974, some of the tribal groups of Papua are still counted as “uncontacted people”.
