Syria before the war. View of the Byzantine ruins of the Dead Cities, near Aleppo, in northern Syria. The Dead or Forgotten Cities are a group of 700 abandoned settlements between Aleppo and Idlib. They belong to the Byzantine period between the 1st to 7th centuries and were abandoned by the 10 century. The settlements feature dwellings, temples, palaces, cisterns, bathhouses. The remains were damaged by the fighting and bombings of the ongoing Syrian civil war that started in 2011.
