Cerro Rico is a mountain in the Andes near the Bolivian city of Potosí. It is estimated that eighty-five percent of the silver produced in the central Andes during the period of the New World Spanish Empire came from the mines at Cerro Rico. Up to 8 million workers died until now in the mines of Cerro Rico.
