Kibbish, Ethiopia - December 31, 2007: A woman from the Surma tribe is sitting in front of a hut. Her lips are pierced for a traditional lip plate but she is not wearing the plate. The skin is decorated by scar patterns - this is an important style of body decoration for Surma people. Using a thorn from a bush, patterns of little wounds are carved in the skin with blades. The scars come out when ash is applied to the wounds. Sometimes, the wounds get inflamed, which makes the scars bigger and more irregular. Location: Kibbish village in the delta of Omo River, Southern Ethiopia.
